Kiryu absorbs very little water and therefore helps drain excess water quickly. Its open structure simultaneously provides the roots with sufficient oxygen. This makes Kiryu particularly suitable for bonsai species that are sensitive to overly wet soil. In addition, the rock provides a mineral addition to the soil mix.
Use
Use Kiryu as part of your bonsai soil mix. Particularly for conifers, Kiryu can be mixed with, for example, Akadama to improve the soil's drainage and aeration. Choose the ratio of your soil mix based on the tree species, location and amount of water the tree needs.
When repotting, carefully remove the old soil around the roots and fill the bonsai pot with the new soil mix. Make sure the substrate settles properly between the roots without compacting it completely. Water the tree carefully after repotting.
